As early as before 1872, the European communities in Sarawak and neighbouring countries were invited to the palace for breakfast before Regatta before competing for Rajah Cup during the reign of Rajah Brooke, as a form of social integration and goodwill for the population in Sarawak. This annual event also included participation from boat operators, the public, private and government sectors, countries such as Brunei, Indonesia and others to earn the right to be called king of the river.
